Safety Update
The suicide rate in construction is 4-times than the national average and 5-times greater than that of all other construction fatalities combined.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 34 and under.
Men in their early 20’s through 50’s account for the bulk of suicides.
Male-dominated industries tend to have more suicides.
Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death for ages 45-54.
A large number of veterans work in the construction industry, which may introduce additional mental health issues.
In response to this largely unrecognized problem, the AGCNWO is sponsoring a “Mental Health First Aid” training class on Monday, December 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at our offices located at 1845 Collingwood Boulevard. This free training is being provided by instructors from The Zepf Center. The class introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs, includes role playing to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, and how to connect people with assistance.
